The juice of the noni fruit has been traditionally used in Polynesian cultures as an anticancer agent. Noni showed anticancer effects in laboratory studies but results from human studies are lacking. This fraction alone and in conjunction with chemotherapy drugs is able to increase the survival of laboratory mice with lung cancer. Scientists are unsure exactly how noni exerts this effect but observe that it enhances certain aspects of the immune system. In cervical cancer cell lines, hepatocellular carcinoma cells, Noni extract induced apoptosis, which means a type of cell death in which a series of molecular steps in a cell lead to its death. This is one method the body uses to get rid of unneeded or abnormal cells. The process of apoptosis may be blocked in cancer cells.
Do not take noni if you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy as it has antioxidant effects and can interfere with treatment.
