Neem is an herb that is used as food in traditional medicine for skin conditions and stomach ailments. Neem has been used in traditional and Ayurvedic medicine, but studies on safety and effectiveness are lacking. Some lab studies show that neem extracts have anticancer activities by inhibiting cancer cell growth. However, there are no human studies showing it to be an effective cancer treatment. Neem decreased the occurrence of chemical-induced gastric tumors in mice, and apoptosis in cervical and prostate cancer cells. Neem also showed chemo preventive effects in animal models. Chemoprevention means the use of drugs, vitamins, or other agents to try to reduce the risk of, or delay the development or recurrence of cancer.
