Perillyl alcohol is a natural substance isolated from the essential oils of lavender or peppermint. Laboratory evidence suggests that it interferes with the dividing cells in several types of cancers including pancreatic, lung, colon, and liver cancers, but these results have not yet translated into benefits in humans. In clinical trials, oral POH did not benefit patients with prostate, ovarian, or breast cancers. POH is also in preclinical development as part of a new drug to improve the effects of temozolomide which is one type of chemo treatment for a type of aggressive brain cancer called glioblastoma multiforme.
