Does Alpha Lipoic Acid help to treat or prevent cancer?

Alpha lipoic acid has been used to prevent and treat cancer but there is no evidence in humans. Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant which is a substance that protects cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Although there is no evidence that it can be used to treat cancer. Alpha lipoic acid leads the cancer cells growth cycle to stop in some type of breast cancer cells, followed by apoptosis. Apoptosis is a type of cell death in which a series of molecular steps in a cell lead to its death. In another study, ALA increased the ability of fluorouracil 5-FU which is one kind of chemotherapy to kill cancer cells of the colon.
