Asparagus has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for various conditions, human studies have not been conducted. There is an alleged use to treat cancer. In the laboratory setting, Chinese asparagus extracts slowed the growth of isolated lung cancer cells, and protected liver cells from alcohol toxicity. laboratory research shows some activity against isolated lung cancer cell lines but human data is needed. In lung cancer cells, the active compound in the plant asparagus showed to be moderate cytotoxicity which means a toxic agent against the cancer cell, and it also decreased the production of cytokines responsible to cause inflammation in lung cancer cells. Cytokine is a substance secreted by the immune cells of your body. like IL-6.
